Teaching at Boston Architectural College

This spring, I’m excited to be teaching “Architecture 3 Design Studio” in the Master of Architecture online program at BAC (Boston Architectural College). The course is split into two connected parts: an architectural design studio and a site-focused studio that explores how buildings are shaped by their surroundings.

The class takes a clear design idea or manifesto and turns it into an architectural proposal.  We dive into principles of landscape architecture and urban design. Students explore sustainable strategies, learn to read and respond to ecological systems, and ultimately produce both a masterplan and a schematic mixed-use building proposal. Major themes include the study of topography, hydrology, accessibility, site experience, and detailed landscape thinking.

Our project site this semester is a one-acre waterfront parking lot just south of the Dorchester Shores Reservation, an area rich with both urban complexity and environmental challenges. The site raises issues like sea-level rise, water management, shoreline protection, aging infrastructure, social equity, and how design can support and impact local communities. Students have the option of stretching the one-acre site to a larger framework to include site elements they deem important.

For the studio project, students will design a mixed-use housing development with 50–60 units, ranging from studios to two-bedrooms, paired with community spaces. Outdoor space is equally important as students will craft both hardscape and softscape strategies that respond to climate change, seasonality, and long-term durability. Designs must also consider Boston-specific factors, including sea-level rise projections, Boston 2030 climate goals, and the use of local materials and plantings.
